My name is Isaac Hanson, and I was born in the Bay Area. I've been at Lyft for over two years; I started as an industry RC and moved into recruiting side of Early Talent in September of 2020. Fun fact: I started a health and wellness transformation five years ago and have lost 100lbs!

What does “the future look like you” mean to you?

"The future looks like me" has a special meaning to me beyond my work as a recruiter. As an openly gay black man, I feel it is my duty to ensure that the world we work in is diverse as possible. For me, the phrase means that we have to understand that our world comprises many races, cultures, perspectives, etc. As a recruiter, my recruiting strategies are grounded in those understandings. It gives me a great sense of joy and fulfillment to know my efforts directly impact the future looking like not only myself but all people. 

Kristen Dauler | Figma 

My name is Kristen. I was born and raised in the Bay Area, where I reside today. I started my recruiting career at Lyft in 2014, where I focused on early career programs. Today, I'm at Figma and am focused on building inclusive and scalable internship and new graduate programs. Working with my team, cross-functional partners, and of course, our incredible students gives me great purpose and motivation to continue paving the way for our talented minds!

What does “the future look like you” mean to you?

What “the future looks like you” means to me is that we all have purpose, and we all deserve a seat at the table. The future looks like any, and all of us!

Shlok Punjabi | Magic Labs

I'm Shlok Punjabi. I'm a technical recruiter based in Southern California working at an early-stage startup called Magic Labs. Magic Labs is building an SDK for passwordless authentication for web2 and web3 environments. Right now, I'm helping scale our recruiting processes and hire for roles across both tech and non-tech. Outside of work, I spend a lot of my free time forcing my friends into spontaneous trips and finding new music on SoundCloud. 

What does “the future look like you” mean to you?

To me, "the future looks like you" essentially means that the future can look like me. It means that there isn't a standard on what I should do or what I can't do because of where I'm from and what I look like. It means I can be who I am and have the opportunity to pursue whatever I want


Kylee Piper | Credit Karma

My name is Kylee Piper, but everyone calls me KP. I am a dog mom and a Colorado gal born and raised. About six years ago, I moved out to San Francisco to pursue my big city dreams. Like many other folks who get into recruiting, I started at an agency, thinking it was just a temporary thing. Now here I am, years later, still as passionate as ever about creating life-changing experiences for all human beings so that they can live out their dreams too!

What does “the future look like you” mean to you?

To me, as a recruiter, “the future looks like you” means creating opportunities for folks where they haven’t been before. When I hear “the future looks like you,” that means that no matter who you are, who you love, how you identify, or what you believe in, you have the necessary resources and equal opportunity to pursue your dreams. The future looks like any of us, and all of us.

Recruiters deserve more credit than we give

Recruiters often get a bad reputation. But let’s face it—you have a hard job. 

You work tirelessly to find the best talent to help your company succeed, yet you rarely get the credit you deserve.

On a typical day, recruiters spend hours looking through resumes, interviewing, and communicating with candidates and hiring managers. Your days are also full of new challenges and surprises.

It’s true that recruiters have to be the bearers of bad news 95% of the time. But it’s your job, and we shouldn’t punish the messengers.

Most of the time, you’re are more than a recruiter. You are a therapist, coach, great listener, advocate, and so much more. You have the best intentions, and you care. 

The data is clear; recruiters deserve more credit than we give you. 

According to a Harvard Business Review article, “companies with above-average total diversity, measured as the average of six dimensions of diversity (migration, industry, career path, gender, education, age), had both 19% points higher innovation revenues and 9% points higher EBIT margins.”

You drive bottom-line business impact on revenue and profit by building diverse teams. 

You also change people’s lives.

Even if a candidate doesn’t end up with an offer at your organization, recruiters still impact their lives by informally coaching them, helping them understand how they can develop for future interviews, and supporting them so they know they’re not alone. 

For most recruiters, there’s no better feeling than knowing that you’ve created a life-changing moment. 

Recruiters change lives

Now more than ever, recruiters are tackling glaringly obvious opportunities in diversity hiring across the U.S. 

But what is diversity hiring? Building diverse teams means hiring for lived experiences as well as work experience. Where we’re from, however we think, whatever we believe, whoever we love, whatever our gender, body, race, or journey—we all look like the future. 

As a recruiter, you are the power player. You have the responsibility to make sure the workforce looks like you, me—everyone. Said differently, you are in the pivotal role to create pathways for under-included talent.
